Dear Giles

I am one of the Thai scholars who used to be a strong admirer of the power-that-be. However, event after event following the Sept 19, 2006 coup, I gradually see things more clearly. The regard of two PAD members died of their own making as national heroes removed my take of "benefit of doubt".

You dare to do what many of us could not, as we live under the world of self restraints for various personal reasons. But we shall give our moral support to you and hope to be able to say what is right when the right time comes.

I constantly poke fun at Messrs Yoon and Thanong on The Nation. Perhaps they do not understand my double meanings, irony and satire ? Anyway I am tolerated. I am particularly wicked to Abhisit, who I claim uses Vegemite as hair gel.
The Bangkok Post Forum are not so tolerant, I have been warned twice already.
I don’t know enough about Prem yet, but I am sure I can have a go at him uses the word
‘pram’ instead of Prem.

I believe that the ‘Silent Coup’ of 2008 was backed by the CIA. A puppet Government, as a front for the military, keeping the super rich elite in power. Echoes of South America. Thailand is a Police State, I don’t have to remind you of that. You must know far more than I do.

As you have said, and I have in other places, the LM laws are there to create a climate of fear, where people report on one another. Joe Stalin would have approved, that is the simple way he controlled the Soviet Union.

Yes an Orwellian Nightmare is coming, only if people let it. I doubt whether the average
Thai has the capacity to understand. I hope you can change that ?

It is easy to criticise the UK on the Nation blog. But try criticising the Thai elite and you get banned. The UK's democracy is not perfect, but there are many organisations who defend rights and act in opposition.In Thailand there is now no freedom of speech.

NO CIVIL WAR with a mutual respect

For old monarchy and yellow royalists, go independent city-state Bangkok like the State of the Vatican City. Non-elected Pope king family, his businesses, his non-taxable total 1123 billion baht wealth is kept in Bangkok, enough money for you Yellow people? Current people properties and businesses, government owned properties in Bangkok belong to the original owner as is. One is not subject to render taxes to monarchy. The tourist will be right back for more fancy ceremonies.

For poor Red people and rest of the country, go Republican Thailand in the new capital city. Royal commercial business is taxable to every Thai citizen for free public health care system, start with back taxes for the last 60 years. Royal properties outside Bangkok change hand to every Thai citizen to generate free public education at all levels. People elected government get to work to serve the people, no more self-serving fancy musical chairs for you guys.

New future of hope, new growth, new wealth, new power is waiting for deserving simple Red people.

And even a reference to me from KhunLalida, who I hope will come back to engage and enlighten Thais like AjarnGile's "Red Manifesto", soon to be translated into every language on Earth...

So far, KhunLalida's comments are far more valid than AjarnGile's, focussed on recent Thai history since the 2006 coup. AjarnGiles comments are of the extremist mound. It is written with deep hate and anger by a HIGHLY PREVILEGED, TRANS-NATIONAL ELITE claiming to speak for the weak and uneducated. It is a narrative of violence as, in one stroke, it paints all Thais, rich or poor, loyal to the monarchy as "stupid", "brain-washed", "undemocratic". This totally ignores the many great, heroic work of generations of Thais who has fought, MANY LOSING THEIR LIVES, for democracy before and since 1932. It also ignores the many, many great men and women, who worked within the confines of the semi-democratic system of the past (the great AjarnPuay included) for the betterment of Thailand and millions of Thai lives - and by every INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS, THEY HAVE CONSTANTLY IMPROVED through the years. Surely, they can get better and I am certain and confident that they will... I am saddened to see AjarnGiles cheapening the good work of his own father and his own Thai friends and colleagues, who took very different paths to his own to work for the betterment of the country.

ANY THAI who keeps comparing what we have today with Myanmar, NKorea or Zimbabwe, or that we are 100 years behind Singapore YOU ARE DOING TRUE FIGHTERS FOR DEMOCRACY in those countries a GRAVE DISSERVICE. It is shocking to think that the les majeste law, THE LEAST OF MOST THAIS' WORRIES, puts the whole country in the same category with the world's most oppressive regimes...

KhunLalida, do come back and lets also discuss Thai politics from 1997-2006, as it precipitated into events of 2006-present that you are dwelling on. Let's practice basic democracy and have a decent dialogue, which is surely not about one-sided rants... I'd like to be enlightened by you out off my "ignorance" as AjarnGiles hasn't done much for me...

Wasn't it Britain who paid for and afforded Thailand's original rail service and trains? If my mind serves me correctly, this was in return/gratitude to Rama V' loyality to the UK.

Contrary to remarks made earlier, at the beginning of the century Thailand was not the richest country in SE-Asia , it was Burma.

Tired of reading these anti-foreigner, anti-Chinese, anti-British comments here which totally smell of PAD propaganda - but wasn't it the Chinese and Rama V and the British which actually made Thailand?
